Fred Payne is stepping down from his post as commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development on July 8 after more than four years to become the next president and chief executive officer of the United Way of Central Indiana. Prior to serving as DWD commissioner, Payne was a top executive at Honda Manufacturing of Indiana. There’s an obvious internal choice for interim (or permanent DWD chief, but that may have to wait until the Governor runs some traps on the viability of shifting Secretary of State Holli Sullivan (R) or installing outgoing Rep. Dan Leonard (R) in the post.
